Thanks for sharing the letter Sean. About a month ago I emailed President Obama on the White House website and also followed up with a snail-mail letter. Still waiting for a reply though.

John,

While I'm all for putting those multiple personalities to useful work, they'll only be able to post comments. Regretably, the site already knows you voted. Dang! So much for emulating Chicago-style politics! Heh.

USMC_Kinda_Guy

Rats!  I just noticed that. Oh well...I'll be sure to vote again when I get in the office this morning.

Now that I voted I think I'll have to let my multiple personalities do the same...mwuuu...haaa...haaa...haaa!

Thanks for the heads-up PNV about the website. I just went on to comment & vote for both bills.

Might I suggest you do a new thread devoted to this website so others get the news as well?

Thanks!

John

 Excellent post USMC!

Thanks again for backing me up on the website.

I've decided not to waste my time anymore with that forum (military.com). Way too many trolls, bitter old geezers, and trouble makers who have nothing better to do than flame someones postings. At least I got the word out. Some of the nasty, rude, and childish responses reminded me of something you'd hear from 4th grader on a school playground. Pretty friggin sad!!!!!

I'll spend my time working with the VFW, Legion, Disabled American Vets, and County Veterans Services Officers to get the word out. The reaction with these groups is overwhelmingly positive unlike the what I've seen on military.com.

So much for fellow vets looking out for one another!

Thanks Paul,

The thread you're referring to is located in the Army Infantry forum under "awards". It is over 48 pages long and at least 2-3 years old if I remember correctly. Since not many members visit that particular thread I wanted to put the word out to all branches and some of the more popular forums.

I guess I can somewhat understand the apathy displayed by the younger service members. What irks me are these crabby old vets that reply with comments like..."I know what I did and that's good enough for me"..."I don't need no stinking medal".

Some have pointed out the cost or that our lawmakers should spend time on other more important things. Of course I toss it right back in their faces with comments like this:

"I respect your opinion but if we use that same logic then I guess we'd have to revoke the Civil War Campaign Medal that was issued to Civil War Vets in 1905...40 years after the wars end!

Let's also not forget the Indian Wars Medal awarded in 1905 to vets who fought in the Indian Wars from 1790-1891.

If we really wanted to play devil's advocate one could make the case that we don't need the Iraq Campaign Medal or the Afghanistan Campaign Medal because after all...we have that wonderful Global War on Terrorism Medal which covers the same time period anyway.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic but do you understand my point?"

I also posted 2 threads in the U.S. Militaria Forum used by military collectors and enthusiasts. The links are below:

If anybody knows of any other military or vets groups websites let's try to get the word out!

Feel free to weigh-in and give your 2 cents in support. We need to convince these folks how important this is to older vets who served during the Cold War. At the very least we can keep it on the radar screen so others can see it.

Thanks.

I went on Military.com and posted numerous threads in different forums about the Cold War Service Medal Act. I put one in each service branch forum, vets forum, and "Hot Topics". I politely asked everyone to please contact their elected officials about co-sponsoring both bills in Congress.

I was hoping to get an overwhelming amount of support from members since many of them are current military. Unfortunately what I got was a lot of apathy and "who cares" comments stating that Cold War Vets don't need a medal and that it doesn't matter because few people on active duty would benefit anyway.

I guess I would expect these kinds of attitudes from today's younger generation but to hear it from older vets just frustrates me to no end...Errrrrrr!!!!!

Cool!

I just emailed my congressman from Wisconsin, Dave Obey. My brother emailed his Wisconsin congressman, Tom Petri, as well.

Is it H.R. 4041 or H.R.. 4051?

 Outstanding!!!!!!

Here's a good suggestion on how to get the word out to fellow vets. If
you go on the American Legion website you can search for local legion
posts within 10, 20, 50, or 100 miles of whatever city you type in. It
will then give you all the contact info for these local posts. Many
have an email contact for the local post commander or adjutant.

I
just sent emails to every legion post within a 50 mile radius of where
I live asking that they please pass the word to their members and to
encourage them to contact their elected officials. Many of these Legion
Vets will qualify for the medal so hopefully we can get as many on
board as possible.

I just contacted my state Senators from Wisconsin, Russ Fiengold & Herb Kohl, and asked them for their support and to consider co-sponsoring as well.

OK folks! Now that we have a bill number it's time to start writing, emailing, and calling our elected officials to make this a reality!

I see there's a bill number listed on wikipedia (S.2743). Is this the correct bill number?

Great news Jerry....thanks for sharing. I can't wait until we have a bill number to reference so I can start harrassing the you-know-what out of my two Senators!

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
