Thanks for the update.  I have made my request to the two Illinois Senators (Burris & Durbin).

I received a copy of the Nov. 2009 issue for free from the VFW simply by asking.  It was well done, but I believe the Nov. 1999 issue was the best so far on Cold War veterans.

The Nov. 1999 issue cover line was: HONORING COLD WAR VETERANS.

Features were:

  Veterans of a Surreal War

  Cold War Combat Chronology 1945 - 1991

Command Post:

America's Veterans Won the War-Recognizing Cold War Vets

Column:

Paying tribute to truly forgotten veterans--Cold War warriors.

The November 1999 issue was outstanding too.  I still have a difficult time comprehending that 10 years after their Cold War vet coverage, and 20 years since the Fall of the Wall, the only Cold War vets eligibile for membership are those that served in West Berlin, received a campaign medal, served in/around S. Korea at any time or those on nuclear submarines.

Anyone ever notice this from the VFW some years back?

Online Survey Favors Extending Membership Eligibility to Cold War Veterans

The results of the VFW's Cold War membership survey are in. During a six- week online survey, website visitors to www.vfw.org were asked if the VFW should extend membership eligibility to Cold War veterans.

We had 6,512 respond to the survey, which ended January 3. Out of the total responses, 72 percent (4,688) said yes, while 28 percent (1,824) said no. Although the survey was open to members and non-members, 90 percent of the respondents were VFW members who collectively voted 72.6 percent in favor of allowing Cold War veterans to join the VFW.

VFW members were asked to check their primary eligibility for membership by checking World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War or "other," which included earning a combat infantry badge, an expeditionary medal, imminent danger pay or those have earned the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, etc.

Yes, I got the same type of 'staffed' response when I wrote to President Obama recently.  Has anyone received a response on the subject from the President?

My message to the VFW:

On reading President Obama's speech to the VFW convention, I noted that he mentioned the Cold War four times, to include: "When communism cast its shadow across so much of the globe, you stood vigilant in a long Cold War—from an airlift in Berlin to the mountains of Korea to the jungles of Vietnam.  When that Cold War ended and old hatreds emerged anew, you turned back aggression from Kuwait to Kosovo. "  November will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.  When will the VFW allow us Cold War veterans to join ranks?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
