I just came across this story on the ABC website. George Stephanopolous will be interviewing President Obama this Sunday. He is currently taking suggestions for questions to ask Obama. I know this is a long shot but I'd like to ask everyone to submit the question about the Cold War Medal. I mentioned the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the fact that the President has been quoted as supporting the medal in the past. I then asked if he would sign an executive order authorizing the medal. If ABC gets enough of these questions about the Cold War Medal who knows? Maybe ol George can surprise the President with this question.

Here's the link to the ABC website for submitting your question.

Maybe this is our moment, I sent my letter, I mean how many chances do you get to ask the Secretary of Defense or the President of the United States a question in a public forum and get an answer, I hope we are put on the map.

Thanks jpeters for the heads up

Done. Here is the question I asked:

"Mr President, during the election you advised the American Cold War Veterans (ACWV) that you supported the creation of a Cold War Victory Medal to honor all those that served during the Cold War (1945-1991). Do you still support a Cold War Victory Medal and will you issue one by Executive Order this year?"

Feel free to use it yourselves.

Ok here is what I asked it might be a little much for some but it is what it is....

Mr. President

Why do veterans always bare the blunt of cost cutting? The United States steps up to help support countrys all  around the world, feed them, cloth them, train their military give them military weapons which can cost billions of dollars, and yet we disreguard our own veterans. The cold war veterans have been fighting to cement their place in history with a cold war service medal yet our goverment fails to reconize our veterans with a military award citing it will cost to much money! So my question is will you as President of the United States sign an executive order creating a cold war medal that is long over due? Here is your response to a medal in your own words this is a reply e-mail you sent to Frank Almquist of American Cold War Veterans, I'm hoping you will live up to your word sir........

I agree that the Cold War Victory medal would be an appropriate honor. The Cold War was a period that required both skilled diplomacy and military readiness. For veterans who had to be prepared to fight a war that most people agreed would be catastrophic, there certainly should be some recognition of service and willingness to defend and go to battle for the United States.
In each of the past two years, the Cold War Victory Medal has passed the House as part of its version of the annual defense authorization bill but has been stymied by influential members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. I certainly share your hope that this impasse can be broken soon.

Sincerely,
Barack Obama
United States Senator

Do you still support a Cold War Victory (or Service) Medal and will you issue one by Executive Order this year, the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall?"

I used Joe Clune's as a baseline for mine; it's short and sweet, to the point, and not accusatory (which is critical if we're asking for a favor).

The only changes were:

1) Added "(or Service)", just in case the question of offending the Russians is an issue.
2) Added "the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall", which strengthens the argument as to why THIS year.

Stick with a "service medal" not "victory medal."

If you haven't already done so, get this question into George S.; the more the merrier. The advantage to the Cold War Medal question is that, compared to some other possible questions (policy on Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea; Healthcase debate, etc.), it's definitely a softball, feel-good type of issue that has the potential of being widely supported (and thus a better candidate for being asked).

As an aside, it also reminds the President that he has the authority to simply issue the medal by Executive Order.

Anyway, hurry up people (heh)!!

Well said USMC!

I'd like to ask people to do one last push to submit questions about the Cold War SERVICE Medal to Stephanopolous. Be sure to mention the upcoming 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. There is a good opportunity for George to ask this question since the issue of President Obama scrapping the missle defense system in Eastern Europe will likely be brought up. Critics had accused the President of caving into Russian concerns about the missle defense system being deployed in former Soviet Block states. That's neither here no there...the point is that the topic will likely turn to Russia's influence over this sensative issue which is a perfect opportunity for George to follow up with our question.

Please ask friends, family and any multiple personalities you might have out there to send a question to George so we can get on a radar.

Thanks in advance!

John

Oops! Sorry about that one Joseph. Thanks for catching my error. I posted that one about the same time I posted some of my pics in the Gulf War Casualty thread.

Meant to say Cold War Service Medal. I just went in and edited the posting so as not to confuse anybody. I guess I shouldn't drink beer and post at the same time. I just get confused...LOL!

I think what he (Shuman) means is he supports a Cold War VICTORY Medal as opposed to a SERVICE medal.  I think that is what he meant here JPETERS.  Correct me if I am wrong shuman.  I think we have had discussions on this forum before regarding the naming of this medal.  Should it be a Victory Medal should it be a Service Medal, should it be a NDSM or ADSM....

OK awhile ago (about a year now I think) we had a poll of the membership Victory vs. Service, and victory won by a large margin.

I thought Service at the time was a better choice but when the membership spoke I listened.

Now we want to fight the same "name the medal" battle again?

This is our problem guys, for every step forward, we take one back. Can we please stop fight among ourselves and fight for the darn medal?

I'm not fighting nothing over the naming of the Medal.  In fact, I've just been monitoring this issue for several years, don't really partake in any letter writing or am I even a member of the ACWV, nor was I a member of the other CWVA but I been looking and posting around for years on the issue.  I personally don't care what they call it.  Don't know what name offers the best chance of passing.  Now, I have an opinion and I believe a CWSM sounds better.  A CWVM sounds like WWII vintage stuff.  But I'm not about changing or fighting about anything around here when it comes to particulars.  If most members here think a Victory Medal sounds better or is more appropriate, I'm good with it.  It's just a medal man.  We know what the Cold War was all about.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
