Glen,

I found some info here http://www.inchem.org/documents/cicads/cicads/cicad12.htm

I can't get the link to work properly, try copy and paste

You can also find lawyers who will handle cases. Google maganese get a lot of stuff.

Glen,

From your post I'm not sure where you got involved with manganese, I would guess when you were on active duty in the artillery unit. From a little google check the dust is the most harmful to the human body.

Google NIOSH and OSHA. And get yourself a good lawyer. While you may have been told you have manganese poisoning and the Military is not interested I think a lawyer could make them very interested.

There is so much missing from your post. Did anyone in the military warn you about manganese? I worked for the Federal Government and was involved with hazardous materials. I can't speak for the military but as a civilian employee of uncle sam we were required to keep a book with fact sheets on all materials and explain to employees the dangers involved.

As well as Niosh and Osha there will be an equivilent agency in the state where exposure took place. I'm not sure if the military is required to deal with the state agency though.

Glen, don't let them off the hook, get a lawyer.

Good luck and keep us informed.

Jon one of the major problems I have is the use of lawyers as some shall take 1/3 of any award or even more, while VSO's have not made much headway when it comes to the VA backlog I have to wonder how much better a Lawyer will fare even if using the court system as the wall is built by the VA ?

My question then becomes whom is best served in the end by all this and at what cost to whom, while it may seem on the surface the service member will get a more timley judgement at what price will they pay as well what would be the time frame to recive the award 5,10,15 or 20 years down the road ?

Many using VSO's have been done right by them for FREE till the red tape games come into play just how much better will lawyers do in whole or in part compared to them?

As for the VA the history speaks for itself push away veterans deserving or not an stall till they give up or died by playing the red tape olympics at this point given the back log they should be awarded the Gold !

At the very least, give AMVETS or DAV a chance to help you, I now have a VA i.d. card and would never have been able to do it on my own. It is basically a paralegal and lawyer's game, sad to say. Their biggest weapon is the run-around, hoping you will give up and go away.

Glen and lostexair,

Your probably both right, I have never dealt with VSO's. What really pisses me off is possibly letting him become exposed to something hazardous without telling him. Just like the agent orange screwing, the real battle starts when you come home.

Take care,

Jon I have seen with my own eyes veterans whom were abused by the system (lost records, the run around and my fav YOU CAN'T PROVE THAT) I watch a decorated VietNam Vet slowly go from Agent Orange, met one whom shapral wounds showed and because records were lost they did not exist according to the VA,one could go on an on all I can say is the VA will help a certain percent then push away the rest.

I hope Glen takes lostexairs advice to see DAV (I am a life member) AMVETS or some VSO no matter what its going to be a long struggle given the backlog of cases pending, to Glen hang in there and my best wishes even if it is only medical treatment you have gained something many may never get.

As for veterans issues I think the idea is spreading that devided we fall and the time is comming to speak as one voice so headway is being made and given the state of the nation at this point paying for the medal/s is an idea best kept on the table, the only ones whom should not have to are those whom died serving(familys) as I feel they paid enough.

They call Me the Cannon Cocker, for those that don't know, that means My MOS was Field Artillery.

I joined the Marines and went to boot camp at Parris Island in Aug of '85. I did My MOS training at Fort Sill, OK. If I recall correctly I was in one of the first classes they had for Marines at Fort Sill.

After My MOS training I was sent to the 3rd Marine Division, on Okinawa. While there, they started the UDP for artillery, we would rotate back to the states, ( 1st Marine Division)  for 18 months. One unit would go over for 6 months then come back, then another would go over and come back and so on.

Two weeks before We were due to rotate back to the states, We got the call that we were heading to the Gulf.

Did the Desert Shield then Desert Storm thing, then had to wait to come home. 3rd Mar Div said that we had done our time and We were no longer part of the 3rd Mar Div, 1st Mar Div said, since we didn't "rotate properly" that We were still part of the 3 rd Mar Div. Lucky for Us someone made that command desision and sent Us to the  1st Mar Div.

July 91, I got out and didn't look back, until events came to light which I don't wish to share here in this public forum.

I think thats enough  for now.

I guess I can consider myself a "member", as I've sent in my application but don't know whether it's been processed yet or not, so I figured I'd post something anyway.....

My name is Bruce Bennett.  I served in the USAF from August 6, 1979 until February 5, 1986.   I was a USAF Security Policeman.   I was assigned to the 44th Missile Security Squadron at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota from December 1979 to September 1982,  the 7022nd Air Base Squadron/Security Police at Diyarbakir, Turkey from September 1982 to September 1983, and the 27th Security Police Squadron at Cannon AFB, New Mexico from September 1983 to February 1986.

I am currently in my 27th year of U.S. Government service and presently work as an Agent with the Department Of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement, having previously served as a Police Officer with the VA and an Inspector with U.S. Customs.

I just recently learned of organizations like this one and the push to have a Cold War Medal approved, which I, of course, support 1,000%!!

I've often felt like Cold War vets don't get anywhere near the amount of credit for what they did, and it's nice to know that there are organizations like this one looking out for those of us that served during the Cold War, and ensuring that we get recognized for the work we did.

I look forward to being a member of the organization.

Thanks.

Hello all,

I'm an Army vet (79-85) that served in West Germany as a MP at NATO Site 4, providing security for nuclear weapons.  I'm a long time supporter of the CW Victory Medal, National Defense Medal, and a NATO Medal.

Hello,

My name is Bill, I was stationed in Dexheim Germany with Bravo Battery, 2nd Battalion 1st ADA on a Nike Hercules Nuc Missile site from 1976-1980. I was a Generator Mechanic and was responsible for Tac Power and serviceing of engineer equipment. I worked in both the Launch and IFC Areas. Currently I live in Northern NJ and I am trying to get Congressman Bill Pascrell to sponsor Cold War Medal Legislation which he promised he would do  however, no action has been taken yet.

In the Launch Area I worked on 45KW Trailer Mounted Stewart Stevenson Generators, 1 per section 1 at assembly area and 1 behind our maitenance shop/Boiler Room which was where the 400 cycle converters were, the whining of those converters would drive you nuts. IFC we had a DOD 60KW for the IFC Trailer and 2 DOD 200KW Trailer Mounted all diesel of course. We were a fixed site we had an underground fuel tank with pump to fill Generators for entire IFC area.  We were inspected by NATO inspectors but were not considered a NATO site. Cant figure that one out.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
