Hello all.

I found this site because I was searching for something that was an integral part of my growing up - a map showing the blast radius of a 1 megaton H-bomb exploding at 1km altitude over the Faslane nuclear submarine base in Scotland. I grew up near Greenock on the Clyde and every time the Glasgow Herald printed this perennial story, there was a graphic showing that the blast circle I lived in was always the "you'll wish you'd been closer and got it clean and fast" part.

In recent years, having my own children now, I'm beginning to realise what it must mean not having to live with the Berlin Wall, the constant rumours of close-run things when bombers were recalled in mid-air, and spine-chilling descriptions of what might happen in our country if someone pressed the button. I'm happy that my kids won't have that threat hanging over them to anything like the extent of the M.A.D days, even if we all know it'll never be a completely safe world now that the H-genie is out of the bottle.

When I found this site, the link I followed showed posts from veterans who complained that the cold war was never properly recognised as a war, and its vets never treated with the respect they deserve. Well, I saw that and decided to register if only to say "thank you" on behalf of my children and their future. I also want to say thank you for one of the most amazing emotional moments of my life when I watched with feelings of pure joy the Wall come down and the ordinary people of Berlin crawling all over it and destroying parts of it with nothing other than a domestic sledgehammer.

None of that would have been possible without the constant efforts - and too often the sacrifice - of millions of men and women from your country, mine, and those of our allies. I salute you all.

Good to hear thanks from europe.  I think NATO should also recognize their greatest victory and main purpose for being.

Steve,

Although this was posted some time ago, I wanted to offer My, " Your very welcome".

Each of Us that put on Our uniforms did it for numerous reasons, I think that the main one that runs though all of those that did serve and have served, is that our children and grand children grow up in a world that is safe.

Deep down I wanted and hoped to make the world a better place, even if it meant losing an arm, a leg, or my life.

Seeing the world the way it is today, if the world powers would agree that they would stop the fighting and live in peace for 50 years, provided that only one more person was to die, then for My family, My country, My world, I would lay down My life for that cause.

I would leave this world knowing that I had in fact made it a better place, for everyone.

Steviefaslane:  I thank you for your post and honor your feelings. We can all take comfort in the belief, there will always be men and women of good intentions to make the sacrifice that is required in the face of aggression and those who would endenture the world to a world without freedom and liberty.  This we can all do for oneanother.  PNV and Cannon Cocker each know full well as we all do what our duty was and what it meant when carried out and it would have been carried out.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
