Hi, I served from 1975 (delayed entry) 1976-1980 (1980-1982 IRR).  I was honorably discharged/ETS from the 172nd Infantry Brigade.  My MOS was 52B.  I remember those cold war days when we would sit on a tarmac ready to deploy to some unknown region (ARTAP) for days only to be told mission was aborted and unpack.  I feel for you all and after reading this board I hope that you fulfil your mission statement.  I, on the otherhand want to reinlist, but at the ripe young age of 50, am told that I am too old although, I have never been in better mental or physical shape.   Are there any other's trying to reinlist?  Press forward.  Never give up.  Hooah!!!

Hi Charles (or do you prefer Charlie)

Welcome to our humble little corner of the world. Look around read our blatherings and post as you see fit.
If you have not yet visited our website it is www.americancoldwarvets.org

Consider joing our group and enter the fray to convince Congress to authorize the Cold War Victory Medal. Write, call, email your senators and bug heck out of them.

Hawaii, a tropical paradise, why would you want to leave all those pretty beach bunnies.

Thank you for your service.

Jerry

Yes, I tried to get back in a couple of times, and the reason was because of all the stories of how Guard and Reserve people were losing jobs, homes and family over deployments. I thought I could help out in that way, but too old, not enough previous service. I tried anyway.................oh well...............

Hi and mahalo Jerald and Daniel for your replies to my post.  I answer to any name, including Chuck.  LOL  I will certainly do what I can to support this worthy cause.  I am well familiar with writing my senators since I bombarded them, the President and DOD about obtaining an exception to policy for my age so I could reinlist.

I do know that on other message board forums that many vets beleive that non-war, non-combat vets don't deserve a medal (which is their right), but in my opinion during the cold war era many service members volunteered to serve their country with a GI bill that ended, a loan for a house, that ended and VA medical that I never knew I qualified for until it was gone.  I believe we were protecting our country and like someone said, we (soldiers) went where we were directed to go.  When the orders came we went.  In my opinion, I feel that the cold war veterans should not be shut out and forgotton and should be treated equally as other veterans.  In my case, I do not feel that the DOD/Armed Services owes me anything, but as I read different forums and different sites and talking to Vets in person, my heart goes out to each and every one of them especially the unfortunate ones that are now houseless/jobless.  I never felt unwated until I received the reject letter from the DOD stating I was too old to serve my country and there was no consideration for exception of policy or waivers.  I have been told there is a bill before Congress to increase the age limit, but like every other bill before Congress is subject to a long, long process.  My hope and prayer is that everyone who served in uniform in the armed services and was discharged honorably should be provided with recognition and benefits.  Press forward and don't give up.  Hooah!!

Sir,

I recommend that you join the Air Force Auxillary (Civil Air Patrol) or the Coast Guard Auxillary.  They need dedicated people and they support Homeland Defense.

Aloha all, thank you very much for the warm welcome.  Much mahalos.

Jerry - My reason for wanting to leave Hawaii is because I miss the military life.  Plus unemployment is high with more and more people losing their jobs.  I tried to use my GI bill a few years ago, but found out it had run out.  I've been telling my wife the only thing I can do is be a soilder even if its been over 27 years ago.  My heart goes out to all those young soldiers and of course those who have been infor quite awhile and are ready to retire.  I have had a wonder life even with our ups and downs.  I have quite a few friends who have retired in the last 10 years.  They think I'm crazy for trying to get back in, but they support me.I'm 50 years and looking for a new career.  Age is just a number and you're only as old as you feel.  After a good work out, I do feel it the next day though.

Jim - thanks for the info.  I've gone to the web site and made a few calls already.  I'm going to complete the applications online.     Press forward.  Never give up.  Hooah!!!   Aloha, Charles, Charlie, Chuck..I hope this doesn't mean I have 3 personalities.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
