Theres still an abandoned Nike Site in Sandy Hook NJ, and their is A Nike Ajax as you drive towards the compound but you are not allowed to go into the Nike Site for a tour. Must be a shortage of Park Rangers.

Welcome Andrew.  The Aussies have always been top notch allies.  Worked with some RAAF troops when I was in Guam.  Great guys.

I am indeed a range-rat - 24C20 (IHAWK Firing Section).  Spent about 60% of my six years at Bliss, also a ReForGer to Wildflecken ("Wild-Chicken"), etc.  Never got to SoKo though, for which I am happy; I don't like the sound of that "Siberian Express."  Freaking Brr!

A couple of my off-base roommates were teaching staff for you Nike-Herc guys too (this'd be very late 70s/early 80s).

Welcome IHAWK.  I appreciated the ADA guys that protected me at Spangdahlem AB, Germany during the Cold War and later in Kuwait.

Hi,  I was one of the first women to go through basic with the guys in 2/81. I was assigned to a Hawk Missile unit in Germany after AIT. We were always getting bomb threats and yes had some go off . Our unit was always on high alert because of "Bogies" coming across restricted air space. We averaged 96 logged in duty hours a week.  I do know the US was kept in the dark about alot of the stuff that was happening because of "National Security".  I got out in 93 after fighting a medical. I did my time and I get so tired of folks pushing it my face that I never fought in a "real" war. I'd like to see how they would handle not knowing who your enemy was or when or where the next bomb was going to go off. (the civilians that refuse to acknowlege us)
What about wondering if this next set of Bogies was it,  the start of an atomic war. I saw a pregnant woman get stabbed in her belly because she was with an american. I saw alot more than that but would rather not go into it here. It is good however that something is starting up to recognize us. Or even to be able to talk about what happened over there. Humm.

Yes Colleen welcome and join in the fight to enlighten the masses.

In the near future a bill will be introduced in the Senate to authorize a Cold War Medal, once we have a bill number
we will be asking all members to contact both of their senators asking them to be a cosponsor, and to vote for passage when it reaches the senate floor.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
