The state of Texas is considering issuing a Veterans ID Card, for anywho served honorably.

A nice idea to give a little recognition. Could not be used to obtain any benefits as far as I can tell. Just
to let people know you are a vet.

Thanks for the heads up Jerry. I've asked our Service Officer to look into this. It seems way too complicated a process to have no benefit to being in possession of one. If I hear anything positive or negative about it I'll post it.

I've always said veterans need an ID card, I think it's a great idea some place's give military discounts and having an ID card would help reap those minor benefits! A veteran Id is a no brainer.

RE:Veterans ID Card
(Date Posted:05/27/2009 10:15:08)

I contacted the Maine State Director of Veteran Affairs on this issue. He thinks it would be a hard sell right
now, due to costs involved. Maine like every other state is having budget problems.

His suggestion was to ask the legislators to have "veteran" stamped on drivers license or an ID for non-drivers.

So I am going to start a push for that, and asking all our Maine members to do the same. Contact your local
senators and representatives first, then hit everyone in the state government. That is how I started with
the Cold War Victory Day, finally got someone to start the process and push it through.

Might be a tough battle since right now they are attempting to cut about half a billion from the budget. But we
can not let that stop us, it is just one more step along the way.

He also told me that work on the GWOT AND Cold War Veterans certificate are progressing and hope to have
them available by July.

Well, since you all are continueing to discuss the Veterans ID card I must chime in. I don NOT support the words "veteran" stamped on the drivers license. It is a drivers license. If you think we have problems now regarding being a veteran, wait until you have it stamped on a Drivers license. Veterans are being targeted now and would be profiled when given your license where ever you need to present a Drivers ID for official business.

What I do support, is when the VA eventually digitizes it's records, that would be the time to now have an official Veterans ID card thru the VA verification process that would be secure. But the Vets ID card would be used as needed, and when you so decide to use it and not by mandate. Then perhaps we lobby for addition of the vets ID card for discounts and vets preferences in certain venues. A proof of service card for all honorably discharged, a platform of equity for all.

Sac Warrior.  That is why I thought a push for the DOD to issue these Veterans cards would be the ideal process.  Considering all honorably discharged veterans receive one and not only just those with VA benefits or VIC healthcare cards eligibilities.  I don't see anything wrong with the state stamping VETERAN on a drivers license.  Seems to me the states have offered or delivered more benefits to veterans that NATIONAL won't.  And there is nothing saying that one would HAVE TO have VETERAN stamped on their license.  I would think that would be up to the veteran.  I for one would like that option.

Jerry Terwilliger.  I would like to support you on this quest.  I am not internet minded type of guy but it would be nice to start something like this web site or some petition to push for one of these bills on veterans id card.  I know we all have our opinions and inputs but anything is better than nothing at all the way I see it.  Get back to me.

Re:Veterans ID Card
(Date Posted:05/27/2009 14:57:11)

Setting up a Veterans ID card by mandate means that it would be mandatory for the state to issue this card IF THE PERSON APPLIES FOR IT.  Like Funeral Honors, DOD made it mandatory that if one request honors during burial, if the family REQUEST for it.  Not mandatory in the sense that you will have funeral honors whether you request it or not.
Sac Warrior.  I don't see where you mean that "VETERANS ARE BEING TARGETED".  If I choose to have VETERAN stamped on my driver's license, I suppose a cop that never served will or can give me a hard time versus one that served in the armed forces.  You must be talking about the PTSD and firearms issues.  In that sense, don't have them put it on your drivers license.  This option benefits guys like me that are not VA eligible.  But I totally agree that DOD should provide it as you say, when they go digital.  Have some kind of NATIONAL kick to it.  Providing honorable discharged guys like me are not left out.  If the state includes me and the National does not include me, I'll go with the state VETERAN on my driver's license.

Ok guys, this could open a whole can of worms from a what you believe, to a what you have experienced, your political perspective or even what you see going on today. I am sure I will miss something but I will try some thoughts on it.

I lived in California for a long time and was once on the receiving end of some inter-branch Cop to veteran brutality when stopped in a vehicle a friend of mine. Long story short, I was called out by the drunk friend/jerk I was with as an Air Force hero, it was early 1990. Basically from my buddies exaggerated drunk statement to the cops I got worked over and spent the night in County. Beat the daylights out of me simply because they were not of the same military branch I was, and were cops. I personally want the option to not reveal I am a veteran if I so choose! I do wish I had an ID card that would be equal to what anyone would get if honorably discharged. But, I would definitely not want the DMV or RMV involved with any of it. I also would not want to let a slippery slope evolve into where we had to disclose we were vets at the DMV or with the state to be put on a license. That would make for something you could not take back later on. I could imagine if the cop happened to hate military or prejudged you to be nuts when they say "veteran" on you license. This happens in parts of the country. Not me folks! I would like the option if the situation was in my favor though to show my National Veteran ID that could help me in the situation etc...but I want the control of it.

If a National Vet ID was created all VSO's could push for companies to give advantages to us that we could show proof with the ID Card. That all makes sense, but all veterans deserve an equal basic treatement that is not happening today.

I agree.  I would rather see the real deal card instead of being on a driver's license.  I don't see the cost issue thing.  You just pay for your ID card.  How much can that be?  Two bucks?  To laminate it add a couple more bucks?  If they were smart, they might even make a little money on the deal, and with the profits, get us a Cold War Medal.  Sounds like a WIN WIN to me.

I doubt this Veterans ID issue went anywhere.  I think it died in the house.  Nobody in America seems to want to support a good thing anymore.  They don't want healthcare reform.  If you think Healthcare in America is as great or better than in Europe, I think they're mistaken.  Nobody wants a veterans ID card.  Nobody wants to support a Cold War Medal, does anyone ever think business like and go for the gusto?  Inovation?  Try something new???   I suppose gays in the military and teenagers being locked up in jail for life advocates warrant more news.

Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
