S.1033

National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 (Introduced in Senate)

Well folks, there it is. The next NDAA for 2010 is available for review. Nothing in it for us but at least we now have a bill number to bitch about.

The House has introduced their version of the NDAA for 2010. It is H.R. 2647. Now we have a House Bill to refer to when writing to Congress along with the Senate version, S. 1033

As expected, there is nothing in it for us at this time. Let's change that!

I'm thinking that indications are this year that passage of a Cold War medal could happen.. I'm trying three things.
1.  writing my senators and congressman to co-sponsor Senator Snowe's bill and introduce companion house legislation to create one.

2.  Writing President Obama, asking him to consider direct executive order. (as per public campaign support)

3.  Writing members of Armed Services Committee to include a Cold War medal provision in 2010 NDAA.

Sure hope all our other VSO support organizations would urge their membership to do the same.

We need a major VSO to push hard on a CWSM and not just pass a Resolution.  The Resolutions are great, but we need news coverage of the VFW and/or American Legion, AMVETS, etc during the 20th Anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down.   Any ideas out there?

A suggestion would be if we had the VSO push your asking for and even if we don't, then we should get Michelle Malkin on our side she is a big supporter of veteran's, she attended and stood side by side with us at The Gathering Of Eagles 2007 in DC when thousands of us veterans went to defend the wall against the likes of Jane Fonda, code Pink and not to mention a few other idiots. But she could be a great advocate for our cause she is always on Bill O'reilly she could turn out to be a great voice. If we can send our reguest for her support along with all the information we have in our favor maybe she will get on board if we have to lets beg her for her help, air time, plug what ever she is willing to give! Below is a link to her page take a gander and see what you think. Or write a personal letter and see what she says, Jerry probably has a formal letter he send's out, maybe he can just change the heading and send it to her and see what happens. There is no  guarantee just a suggestion.

House schedule next week.

Looks like they will take up Defense Bill again on Wednesday, may be time for an amendment to be introduced, maybe by a committee member.

They are to start the appropriation for the defense bill this week.

I've sent letters to Armed Forces Committee members and my own representatives asking them to include a medal provision in 2010 NDAA.  Have also asked my Senators to support any legislation concerniong a Cold War medal.  I will write President Obama asking him to consider executive order in light of his campaign commitment.  Is there any particular persons/officers we might write at the various VSOs asking them to support?  I would think the Legion and VFW would be very eager to change charter to allow Cold War veterans into their ranks to maintain membership numbers, or possibly they get enough new memberships from mideast veterans, but I do think we need their vigourous support if we're going to be successful.

Tim, Keep up the good work writting to everyone. I hit all members of the SASC about every week or so.

We already have support from VFW and Legion, Amvet and a few other VSO's.

VFW and Legion are chartered by congress, only congress can change them, not the VSO

The VSO's can request to congress to amend changes to allow membership flexibility.

I was rereading some of the postings on the forum. I started to make a comment about the NDAA 2010
and as happens too often my fingers were not in sync with my brain....I typed NADA ...which is what it
looks like we will get this year.

So off goes another letter to Senator Snowe asking her what are her plans. Tomorrow I will again try
to call her staff member  Joe Sixeas National Security Advisor. I talked to him while we were in DC and
he seemed very interested and to be on our side.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
