Does anyone have a list of what is being done to honor Cold War Vets on a State by State basis?

Which states have a CW Medal?
Which states have proclamations for Cold War Victory Day (May 1) each year?
Who is coordinating efforts in each State

On the National front....
Who is working with Congress for national recognition?

Well that post just went up in a puff of nothing.

Hector Autry, our Historian; who just resigned his position, hopefully has a complete list.

Louisiana as far as I know is the only state to issue a medal. New York had it passed in the Assembly, but
the Governor vetoed it. New Jersey was considering a medal but opted to go with a certificate (as far as I am aware). Maine has said no to medal, no money for it; and several members are against it.

Maine did declare May 1st as Cold War Victory Day in perputity. The City of Portland, the City of South Portland,
and the County of Cumberland have all declared May 1st as A Day of Remembrance for the Forgotten Heroes
of the Cold War.

I believe Colorado has again declared Cold War Victory Day. I am not sure by New Jersey may have also.

Several of us are working contacts in DC.

We need every member to continue contacting; fax, phone, mail, email, both of their senators ask them
to cosponsor S.1097 and then vote for passage when it reaches the Senate Floor.

Then contact your senators and representatives and ask them to introduce an amendment to NDAA 2009 to provide for a Cold War Medal.

We have to keep telling them what we want. Send emails to all members of the Senate Armed Services Committee ask them to vote S.1097 out of committee. Get it to the Senate Floor soonest.

Jerry

Jerry do you have any text for letters to the Congress Critters?  Or should we just wing it?

I will be happy to work on the Kansas State House too.

Here is a letter to Congressman Michaud,(who did express interest in the medal) feel free to use it and change what is necessary.

The Honorable Mike Michaud
Washington, DC

Dear Congressman Michaud:

This year is the twentith anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the begining of the end of the Cold War.

The Americn Cold War Veterans, Inc, VFW, American Legion, AMVETS, and other veterans service organizations beleive this would be the perfect time to remember those brave and dedicated veterans who served their country honorably during the Cold War.

We have noticed that the NDAA 2009 does not have a provision for a Cold War Victory Medal, unlike the NDAA for 2008.

Therefor Congrssman Michaud we are asking if you would introduce an amendment to NDAA 2009 to provide for the issuance of a Cold War Victory Medal. Or if you prefer you could introduce it as a stand alone bill, similiar to S.,1097 The Cold War Medal Act 2007.

Our country's veterans would be very greatful to you for standing tall to remember and honor our veterans.

Warm Regards,

J

Here is my latest to all members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, just change the names as necessary.

The Honorable Carl Levin
Washington, DC

Dear Senator Levin:

This year marks the twentith anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the begining of the end of the Cold War.

The American Cold War Veterans, Inc., VFW, American Legion, Amvets and several other veterans organizations feel this would be the proper time to honor all our veterans who served honorably during the Cold War, from Sept 1945 to Dec. 1991.

For the last ten years or so A Cold War Victory Medal has been introduced, discussed and then dropped and forgotten.

There is presently a bill S.1097 The Cold War Medal Act 2007 that has been languashing in the Senate Armed Service Committee for a very long time.

Please as Chairman of the Commoittee bring this bill to the fore and let it be voted upon, and passed out of committee.  We also ask that you vote in favor of this bill when it reaches the full Senate Floor.

Or,if you would prefer please consider introducing an amendment to the NDAA for Fiscal Year 2009 to include provision for a Cold War Victory/Service Medal.

Let this be the year in conjunction with the celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall, that our country remembers, recognizes and honors all those brave and dedicated veterans from the Cold War.

Regards,

Jerald Terwilliger

I believe Alaska NG has a Cold War Service Ribbon.  I believe it is the Foxfall design.

Sorry guys... but due to my lawyers request for my inactivity... I missed this...

Colorado does do the proclamation each May 1st...as long as I remember to get the paperwork in and get it approved. I haven't been able to really start working on much else. If and when I ever get released...so I can actually be active I will try to get to the down to the Capital building and see what I can come up with. I just need to find a couple of Senators and Representatives to work with. I have a couple of people that I am already working with down there.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
