Here are two interesting facts I learned today from my senators newsletter.

The Eisenhower interstate system was required to have one mile of straight highway every five miles in case aircraft had to land in time of war or emergencies.

The term "the whole nine yards" came from the length of the fifty caliber ammo belts on fighter aircraft which were twenty-seven feet long. Whenever they used up all their ammo they told the ground crew they gave them the whole nine yards....

Did your senators mention the interstate system was also built specifically to move weapon systems? Example in this link is the Transport Erector housing MMIII downstage, which we drove in convoy.

No, I didn't know it was specifically for that purpose.

I understand walking the plank, and Davy Jones locker, but " between the devil and the deep blue sea", I don't know the story on. I am sure some of these Navy folk can fill me in...............

Ok,

The devil was some planking that surrounded the top of old sailing ships along the rail, if you had to be lowered to do some work below this level you were between it and the ocean...

Its funny this site is the only place where we all knew the words "if the baloon goes up", never forgot.

cheers,

Jon
