Obviously very good news Jerry. Thanks for sharing it. It gives us some additional hope. Best of all, it reads like you are definitely on the Senator's radar from now on. Persistence does pay off.

Jerry,
Outstanding!!!  Thank you for your hard work on our behalf.  We should all send letters of thanks to her.  And of course, we need to hit our own senators and reps for their support.  Once again, THANK YOU, JERRY!!!

Jerry thats Outstanding news, your hard work is now paying off, and Jim is right we need to work on getting everybody else on board as co-sponsors, the squeeky wheel gets the greese!!!! Great news so there is a god...

I think we still need to work on showing DOD is way off on it's numbers and prove that issuing a CWVM or a CWSM is not in any way shape or form a duplication of any previous award, to me they are our biggest obstacle and the main reason why we haven't succeeded they pretty much squashed it for us in years past.......................

Jerry,
Great job buddy. This id definitely the best news we've had around here for a long time. Kudos! Olympia Snowe has always been a class act (as is Susan Collins, I should hasten to add), and it's fabulous to see that she'll introduce a Cold War Medal bill.

The nice thing about this is, as the senior Senator from the lovely state of Maine (where I was privledged to live for about 4-5 years BTW), Senator Snowe will have much more clout in getting this bill through (Seniority has its privledges in the Senate) than had Senator Collins. And Senator Collins, as I recall from the other [bad news] thread, stated that she would certianly sign on as a cosponsor once as bill was introduced. Looks to me like we're off to a good start, with both of Maine's Senators - both of whom are moderate Republicans who can (and often have) reached across the aisle in bipartisan fashion on many issues - leading the effort. I'm absolutely thrilled at the prospect.

Perhaps the ACLV Leadership could entreat that Congressman, the one who is introducing the 20-year commemoration bill about the fall of the Berlin Wall, to also work with Senator Snowe and take the lead on becoming the sponsor of the companion bill in the House of Representives. Certainly, the sentiments expressed in his Berlin War bill would make him a logical choice to sponsor the House's companion bill to Senator Snowe's Cold War Medal Bill.

A key, fundamental difference between previous years' efforts and the efforts of THIS year, is that the 20 Year Anniversity of the fall of the Berlin Wall (which led to the subsequent collapse of Communism and freed those beyond the Iron Curtain) is THIS YEAR. With all the commemorations and celebrations no doubt being planned, what better way to truly honor the United States in its victory in the Cold War than to bestow the long-overdue Cold War Medal to the servicemen and servicewomen who made this victory possible?

Anyways, the stars are aligned this year; I have a very good feeling about our prospects this year.

Mea culpa. I meant "ACWV" Leadership in previous post (must've had ACLU on the brain, maybe a premonition I'm going to get sued or something - hehe).

Great work on the part of Jerald Terwilliger.  I don't know if it would go anywhere, but should we all also be writing our representatives, (or Armed Services Committee members) to try and get a medal provision in 2010 NDAA? When is the NDAA written, or has it already been submitted to committee?  I don't know a lot about how these things work.

Meaning I don't know if a provision for a Cold War medal in the NDAA "would go anywhere", not Senator Snowe's bill.  Not a good writer here.

Bill,  How did the copy I sent by email turn out? If that was not good try to copy the letter from here to
your pictures or photos and maybe you can clean it up a little.

RE:Some Good News
(Date Posted:07/06/2009 17:38:46)

Jerry's post was the best news we got this year, but I think our opportunities in congress this year are slim.  Hopefully, Senator Snowe will act so we can be included next year.  Although Congress could act in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Berlin Wall coming down.  But, I think we need to get back on the radar of Obama.  Remember this:

E-mail to ACWV member Frank Almquist:

Dear Frank:
I agree that the Cold War Victory medal would be an appropriate honor. The Cold War was a period that required both skilled diplomacy and military readiness. For veterans who had to be prepared to fight a war that most people agreed would be catastrophic, there certainly should be some recognition of service and willingness to defend and go to battle for the United States.
In each of the past two years, the Cold War Victory Medal has passed the House as part of its version of the annual defense authorization bill but has been stymied by influential members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. I certainly share your hope that this impasse can be broken soon.

Sincerely,
Barack Obama
United States Senator

Is anyone out there a member of Obama sites on Facebook or Twitter?  Can you post this letter and keep on their radar?  Maybe someone in his court will get him to respond.

Obama is too busy going around in the world apologizing about America's past conduct.

Hi Jerry,

First of all Thank You for your hard work on working with Senator Snowe to introduce a Cold War Medal bill.

I know that she has not introduced it yet but if it is not to late and if it is appropriate I would like to suggest that Senator Snowe be aware of the below Senators, which could be potential Co-Sponsors since they have already Co-Sponsored previous Cold War Medal Bills [Please see the wiki website for further reference]

1 Susan Collins(ME)
2 Dick Durbin(IL)
3 Lindsey Graham(SD)
4 Kay Bailey Hutchison(TX)
5 Tim Johnson(SD)
6 Mary Landrieu(LA)
7 Blanche Lincoln(AR)
8 Mark Pryor(AR)
9 Chuck Schumer(NY)
10 Olympia Snowe(ME)
11 David Vitter(LA)

[David Vitter(LA) and Lindsey Graham(SD) co-sponsored a Cold ar Medal Bill when each was a House Member, please see the wiki website for further reference]

Hopefully, she'll get around to it after the Recess. It would be very helpful insofar as it will give us an actual Bill number when we write our own Senators.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
