E-mail received by ACWV member FRANK ALMQUIST (Illinois resident)

 Dear Frank:

Please accept my sincere apology for the delay in my response to your e-mail in support of the Cold War Victory Medal. I am still working on the challenge of responding efficiently to as many as 2,000 letters, e-mails and calls a day from my Illinois constituents.

I agree that the Cold War Victory medal would be an appropriate honor. The Cold War was a period that required both skilled diplomacy and military readiness. For veterans such as yourself, who had to be prepared to fight a war that most people agreed would be catastrophic, there certainly should be some recognition of service and willingness to defend and go to battle for the United States.

In each of the past two years, the Cold War Victory Medal has passed the House as part of its version of the annual defense authorization bill but has been stymied by influential members of the Senate Armed Services Committee. In both cases, members of the Senate Armed Services Committee chose not to include the Cold War Victory Medal provision in their version of the bill, and House negotiators have conceded to them during conference committee negotiations as well. I certainly share your hope that this impasse can be broken soon.

Again, I apologize for the inordinate delay in my response. I hope it will not deter you from staying in touch.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama
United States Senator

To All:
I put the following on the President-elect web site:

"WILL President-elect Barack Obama follow thru with his
pledge for a Cold War Victory medal as stated to the Cold War Veterans
Association. Letter sent to Frank Almquist by President-elect Barack Obama."
Denny, Rehoboth Beach, De

The President Elect's web site is asking question with people responding to yes or no. Please vote by going
to Below web address. You need to go to Open for Questions round two. Go to the bottom and select
"Open for Question Feature Here" Then select National Security, once that is done, in the search slot
type Cold War and let it search. Today there are about thirty questions listed. Once you find the above,
vote yes and it will ask you to sign in. Make sure the yes is still selected after the sign in. You can monitor its progress by signing in and doing the same search. If there are enough people voting for this topic I expect
they will take it to the next round if they do that?

Dear Denton,

We wanted to tell you about a new feature on Change.gov which lets you bring your ideas directly to the President.

It's called the Citizen's Briefing Book, and it's an online forum where you can share your ideas, and rate or offer comments on the ideas of others.

The best-rated ones will rise to the top, and after the Inauguration, we'll print them out and gather them into a binder like the ones the President receives every day from experts and advisors. If you participate, your idea could be included in the Citizen's Briefing Book to be delivered to President Obama.

Visit the Citizen's Briefing Book now and share your ideas:

Re:SENATOR OBAMA ON COLD WAR MEDAL

I'd like to suggest that members who support thye Cold War Medal start sending emails and inquiries into some of the national media outlets. News organizations like ABC, CBS, MSNBC, etc. are always looking for suggestions for new stories.

I just went on ABC's website and clicked on their "comments & suggestions" section. I then clicked on "suggestions for new content" and sent an email suggesting they do a story on Cold War Veterans and the fact that these vets have not been recognized with an official service medal. I mentioned that it's a perfect time to do a special news piece on the Cold War since this year will mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

So what do you say? Let's start bombarding as many national media outlets as possible and get some P.R. for our cause. The more this issue is put in the national news the harder it will be for Congress and President Obama to ignore us.

Ok Everyone, here are the three questions everyone needs to vote aye on! I posted the first one. everyone find a way to get more people to make an account and register and vote! Tomorrow is it!

Go to the link above and hit veterans in the left navigation, then enter "COLD WAR" into the search and it will take you these three questions right off.  Go get'em. Scott

"On 10-18-06, you said: "I agree that the Cold War Victory medal would be an appropriate honor." On 1-8-08. Obama for America: "As president, he would sign legislation creating a cold war medal." Will you create the Medal by Executive Order?"
sacwarrior, New Hampshire  -  Veterans

"When will Congress People pass an amendment for the "period of war" called the Cold War( September 2,1945 to August 21,1991) to be inserted into Title 38, U.S.C.,Section 101-Definitions by Public Law to help process Veterans Compensation claims?"
Frank, Moline,IL  -  Veterans

"Do you think it is appropriate that civilians, who don't face the inherent risks of military Service, should receive the same "Cold War Recognition Certificate", as the military? A "Cold War Victory Medal" should be created for the military."

Voting is closed but in every question the "for" the medal always beat the "againt" the medal.

Numbers could have been higher but a win is a win.

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
