Hi,
I received a letter from Senator Collins, Maine. There is a new bill S. 1097 Cold War Medal Act. I am not sure where it stands as far as a vote on the bill but the Senator and I have had a few discussions on the matter and she is a avid supporter of the bill.
I hope we get some action on this

Senator Kennedy is a Cold War veteran.  I know he is ill, and hope he can recover, but I wonder if he supports this bill, even though he hasn't signed up as a co-sponsor.  I know he remains active and voted on a medicare bill on Wednesday.  He and Senator Clinton would be powerful advocates in this election year.  I am not from Massachusetts. The continuing lack of Cold War recognition by the government that called upon us to defend it is a tragedy for the thousands of Cold War veterans passing away every year.

Kennedy's voting record of military support during the Cold War sucks.  But since his brother John got us through the Cuban Missile Crisis, you would think he would want history to remember the Cold War.  It is always worth writing a letter, though.

To Jim Weller:

I read your opinion of Ted Kennedy on the Cold War with interest. I am a Kennedyphile, but would like to See Ted Kennedy get on board. During the Vietnam era, the Vietnam veterans were called names such as 'baby-killer, hearings were held by non-governmental groups verbally chronicling atrocities, and GI educational increase effort in Congress were stalled and criticized.

In addition the attacks on Vietnam spread like a cancer to veterans who didn't serve in Vietnam geographically, but were in the same time frame. Even conservatives who suited up to support the military didn't generally support the veterans. President Richard Nixon even threatened to veto an increase in the GI educational benefits if it progressed to his desk. The result to those who followed the treatment of Vietnam era veterans were to publish articles about veterans getting short-changed.

While I'm not a medal kind of guy, I support the New York veteran's efforts for the above reasons.

Carl,

To answer your question S.1097 is still just sitting in the Senate Armed Services Committee. Both Senator Collins, and Senator Snowe from our great state are cosponsors of the bill.

I  managed to have the Maine   joint legislature declare May 1st as Cold War Victory Day. The joint legislature also signed and sent to officals in DC a proclamation urging Congress to pass S.1097 at my request.

The state is declining to issue a Cold War Medal, but I keep asking them anyway. Possibly after the elections, and the next legislature is installed we can work on them again.

So we really need all our members to contact their senators and ask them to be a cosponsor of S.1097 and then vote for passage when it reaches the senate floor.

Write, call, fax them all, and contact all the members of the SASC, even if you are not from their state, keep
the pressure on them.

I also managed to persuade Cumberland County, City of South Portland, City of Portland to declare
May 1st as A Day of Remembrance for the Forgotten Heroes of the Cold War

It takes few letters and maybe a phone call or two, but it can be done.

Frank D,
I appreciate your point.  I'm sure we agree on some things, but we are probably on different sides of the political spectrum.  I was more interested in military forces and weapons systems being funded during the Cold War.  I thank God that it was finally funded in the end, because I'm still serving, and we are still using those same systems.
On our common concerns, I think it is good that we have a wide spectrum of members, because we have to work all sides of the political spectrum.  We can't afford to become too political and scare off members or political support.
