http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War_Victory_Medal

OK. There's the link to the Wikipedia article regarding the Cold War Medal (and kudos to whoever updated it to include the brand new Senate bill).

The article lists all previous sponsorship/cosponsorship in the House and the Senate for previous Cold War Medal bills. It is probably a good idea to check these lists BEFORE contacting your Senators (and, once we get a companion bill number for the House, your Congressperson). If your Senator(s) has been a sponsor/cosponsor of previous Cold War Medal legislation, it would be a good idea to remind the Senator (actually, his/her staff) of this previous support in your e-mail. Hey, they have a bunch of bills that they are working on, so there's something to be said for reminding their staffs that they were already in support of this legislation before; should be a slam-dunk for their continued support (via cosponsorship).

The Wikipedia article contains a wealth of information regarding all the Cold War Medal legislative efforts; please give the article a quick review to provide for everyone's situational awareness.

Also, it might help to point out to Senators if their other Senator (from the State) is a sponsor already.

(Hope the dang link works).

I see there's a bill number listed on wikipedia (S.2743). Is this the correct bill number?

Does anyone know how to update the article in Wikipedia? While the new Senate bill (S.2743) of the Cold War Service Medal of 2009 is listed, the House's companion bill (H.R. 4051) apparently is not.

Hi TheBeastFromTheEast

Did you add Bill Pascrell (NJ) as a co-sponsor to H.R.4051?  I do not see him listed as a co-sponsor.

I will delete the HR4501 entry you added to "Bills in the United States Senate"  becuase this is the Senate Section.

H.R. 4051 is in the Representative section here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_War_Victory_Medal#Bills_in_the_U.S._House_of_Representatives

Thanks

Jim I did add him, in another post Nikehercules1 said he is now a co-sponsor maybe I jumped the gun, I have yet to see any information updated showing he is, maybe this info was obtained via the phone.

As far as deleting it from the senate section that's fine I only put it their because the previous edits had the H.R. bills list in the senate section in 110th 108th and the 107th congress. I also listed him in the house section, if he is not a co-sponsor you can hit the delete button. Good job Jim thanks......

Re. Bill Pascrell, remember that THOMAS might take a day or two to update the data on the bills. I'd keep Pascrell in the Wiki article for the time being; you can always yank the name out later if indeed it is in error.

For what's it worth, I've contacted both Senators from WV (Byrd and Rockefeller).

Honoring Cold War Veterans on NPR Weekend America 12-27-08

MISSION

The American Cold War Veterans is a nonpartisan 501c nonprofit veterans service organization incorporated in the State of Florida and founded on August 18, 2007 at The Truman Library in Independence, MO. As a group we are dedicated to all of our Brother and Sister Veterans, with special dedication to those who served during the Cold War era September 1945 to December 1991. Our Mission is to bring respect, recognition and awareness to Veterans of the Cold War era no matter what branch of service, whether active duty, reserve or National Guard. We are committed to honoring the sacrifices made by millions of American men and women during the Cold War, especially those who paid the ultimate price of life or liberty. We intend to see that the Cold War's history is completely and accurately understood by people everywhere. We are united in these goals and speak with one voice.

NDAA 2002 - FACT

The NDAA 2002 was passed by congress October 2001 signed into Law Dec. 28 2001, In the NDAA that was approved by both houses, signed into law by the President, was the Sense of Congress to authorize the Campaign Medal for service in the Cold War.

NATIONAL DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION ACT FOR FISCAL YEAR 2002

115 STAT. 1118 PUBLIC LAW 107–107—DEC. 28, 2001 Code, that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to that individual is warranted and that a waiver of time restrictions prescribed by law for recommendation for such award is recommended.

SEC. 556. SENSE OF CONGRESS ON ISSUANCE OF CERTAIN MEDALS.
It is the sense of Congress that the Secretary of Defense should consider authorizing—

  1. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Korea Defense Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served in the Republic of Korea, or the waters adjacent thereto, during the period beginning on July 28, 1954, and ending on such date thereafter as the Secretary considers appropriate;

  2. the issuance of a campaign medal, to be known as the Cold War Service Medal, to each person who while a member of the Armed Forces served satisfactorily on active duty during the Cold War; and

  3. the award of the Vietnam Service Medal to any member or former member of the Armed Forces who was awarded the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for participation in military operations designated as Operation Frequent Wind arising from the evacuation of Vietnam on April 29 and 30, 1975.

The Medal was not created! Why?

Were Cold War veterans casualties of the Iraq War planning?

We will continue to fight!
